The mobile optimatization of the web sites and content have been bubbling under such a long time.
Around 2003 when the first online mobile handhelds and mobile phones with internet browsers were launched the question of the mobile optimized sites were based on the question of decreasing the need of the bandwith. Now when the mobile devices have 3G broadband connection this question is not such a big topic anymore. Todays more urgent needs are on the ease of use, adjusted interface design and creating services based for mobile use – services using geographic information or social sharing and service designs based on the situations where you are on the road. Also some of the services are just designed for mobile device platform like the iphone apps are.
Ok. I checked out what it takes to create a mobile optimized site in the WordPress 3.0 that I’m using on this blog. Basicly only one plugin set was needed to be installed. I did some small configurations and after that I had mobile optimized site. Such a simple thing.
Now if you are reading this on the mobile. In the end of the page there is a link if you want to change back to the desktop version the site.
Mobile web services have great potential in them. What you need to do is a desktop research about your users. How many of them are using the site on mobile devices – easily found from the Google analytics basic data reports. Another thing is to plan which kind of added value you could give to the mobile users. Is the core in the content or could there be mobile services served?
In my case I ended up to the solution that I have optimized layout and different kind of structure and limited content for the mobile users. My main thing is in the text so the KPI is to have serve the text for the devices in best readable form.
