During the couple last years I have been resolving clients problems in the field of e-commerce, virtual business models and stuff. I would like to point out the critical change in the business thinking that you should be aware. I don’t want to go in the deep waters of e-commerce, into the background of the needs and the solutions. In my experience there is no general facts or guide how to get your business running in the web. It’s as a big and cruzial change in any company as a creating totally new business model or going to totally markets. But there is something that might help to see the horizon.

This post were inspired by The Personal MBA and his post about the way he have learn how to run business and how to see the fundamental facts of business. (http://personalmba.com/everything-i-know-about-business-i-learned-from-world-of-warcraft/)

His approach in this post is to compare the generally known methods to his experience in the virtual world of the WoW. For me he is preperesting a person who have been growing and developing his thinking by following how ppl are acting in the virtual world. For those who are new with the idea of the World of Warcraft – it’s a multiplayer digital universe of online gaming based on the role-playing game. It has a own currency – the WoW gold and it’s allowing ppl to interact its virtual economy for “real” economic benefits. The currency has its value in the real world money and that’s how the commerce in the virtual markets have been booming up to multi billion dollar industry. Check out wikipedia article for more info (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_economy)

My humble statement in here is that the for understanding the future of the business you should understand how ppl are acting in the virtual worlds and how the virtual economy is contructing. The comparision with the todays accredited facts in the business world versus the facts in the virtual world are giving one approach to understand the upcoming changes in the culture alike in the business.

Digitalfie is a project of the 9 european cinema chains that are about to develop the digital cinema experience with ways of interaction between customers and the cinema. This project is based on the Digital Cinema Experience results of the research by peacefulfish and Lapland Centre of Expertise for the Experience – LEO. This research was done in year 2007 and it contained focus group interviews with the customers and cinema professionals. These interviews were used as a foresight to the development of the business models and general cultural context of the cinema.

I was a cowriter on this reseasch and the journey to the world of the digitalizing cinema was really interesting. This also gived me the first push on the field of the cinema, audience and reception reasearch. And during the couple last years I have found this path really exciting for myself too. The role of the audiences is booming through the social media and the convergence culture phenomenons. The barriors between privat and public actions of audiences are faling down throught the new roles of audiences. The active cultural impact is possible through new interactive medias and collide of the ways of the Internet use.

Digitalfie is about to develop web services for local cinemas to develop the interaction between customers and cinemas. There’s a lot of possibilities for services in this field that can really enrich the thing that we might later on call as Cinema 2.0.

The mobile optimatization of the web sites and content have been bubbling under such a long time.

Around 2003 when the first online mobile handhelds and mobile phones with internet browsers were launched the question of the mobile optimized sites were based on the question of decreasing the need of the bandwith. Now when the mobile devices have 3G broadband connection this question is not such a big topic anymore. Todays more urgent needs are on the ease of use, adjusted interface design and creating services based for mobile use – services using geographic information or social sharing and service designs based on the situations where you are on the road. Also some of the services are just designed for mobile device platform like the iphone apps are.

Ok. I checked out what it takes to create a mobile optimized site in the WordPress 3.0 that I’m using on this blog. Basicly only one plugin set was needed to be installed. I did some small configurations and after that I had mobile optimized site. Such a simple thing.

Now if you are reading this on the mobile. In the end of the page there is a link if you want to change back to the desktop version the site.

Mobile web services have great potential in them. What you need to do is a desktop research about your users. How many of them are using the site on mobile devices – easily found from the Google analytics basic data reports. Another thing is to plan which kind of added value you could give to the mobile users. Is the core in the content or could there be mobile services served?

In my case I ended up to the solution that I have optimized layout and different kind of structure and limited content for the mobile users. My main thing is in the text so the KPI is to have serve the text for the devices in best readable form.

Ok. Now pick up your phone and visit in the www.anttibrunni.net and you will see the change.

This is one of the things I like to start from. It’s the story how I found the Internet and became part of it.

I was 13 years old teen in the year 1994. All started from my finnish language lesson. We had to give a presentation about free subject. Everyone had a possibility to choose any subject he wanted. First commercial Internet connection where launched by Eunet and Tele in year 1993. News were booming about the great possibilities of Internet during the summer of ’94. The first commercial finnish Internet page were launched in the same year. Some of my friends families had got an Internet connection in the fall. I some how got an idea togive a presentation about the Internet to my class.

I really didn’t have a clue what it was about and what I could tell about it. Me and my best friend were doing our homework and preparing the presentations. My friends parents had the Multimedia PC and Microsoft Encarta Encylopedia CD-ROM. It helped a lot when creating the presentations. I read about the Tim Bernes-Lee and the birth of World Wide Web. Actually I also used the first time the Internet in my friends computer by finding information about the finnish Internet pages. I had started also the ADP lessons in the school during that fall.

I wrote up a presentation and created some overhead foils to be presented. I also created a lists of the finnish existings Internet pages for my class mates to check out. Yeah, I shared my links in the paper for the guys to check up when they get to the home. Finland and City of Oulu really where on the edge in the Internet on that time. Schools and students had computers and access to the web. We even had our first email addresses and possibilities for own web folder and web pages in year 1995. That was when we were coding first time with Pascal, Turbo Pascal, Assembly and Visual Basics.

I kept the presentation and told about the servers and browsers. And told classmates even about the basics how the servers are networked. My presentation were success. Teacher told that my presentation were very deeply focused.

That’s how it started. I did read even more about the Internet from the libary books and when ever I got a change to use Internet I did it.

In the winter during the winter holiday I were visiting in my aunt for couple days. They had it all – a computer and a modem internet access. What happend was that I was reading about how to write hyper text markup language. Then I got an idea to write some own code and to create offline html-pages. Those two or three days were spent on the computer on their upstairs. I was testing different kind of tags and creating a come basic site. On that time the Mosaic browser and the web pages were mostly black and white or gray.

During that spring I were spending more and more time on my aunts place writing the html pages. I think the deep understanding about web creation and nature of Internet was on born in me on that time. I dont really remember when was the first time I put my pages into Internet. Our family got an multimedia computer in October 1995.

After that I was spending a huge ammount of my parents money and my own time by browsing the loose net of the Internet. The use of modem Internet connection were ridiculous expensive. The most expensive phone bills were about 1000 finnish marks (around 200 current euros) and it was very big money for our family.

After this Internet have raised the one of the biggest segments of the business in the world. I have also been working and studying with it again and again. In this point after 16 years close relation with Internet I can only guess how everything would be without of it.
